This morning Darci woke up fairly early (6am) and as she does not like the room very much we went out and took a walk. We found a different route that does not take our life in our hands when we cross the street. We travelled along a very busy street and I decided to take one of the side streets and came across a very nice surprise, a shopping courtyard that had music piped in with several elderly chinese folks doing their daily exercises. They were so in tune with each other, it was beautiful to watch. Unfortunately I did not take any pictures because I did not want to offend them but it certainly was a special moment for me (not Darci she was fussy, not enough action for her). There are about 5 other couples that also traveled to Nanchang. Thy are all so very nice and many of us are having the same issues with our children and it is a great support group!! There is a couple from Franklin, TN that are in my group and their daughter and Darci are about the same age, so hopefully we can get our daughters together when we get home. Many of us headed off today to a park called the People’s Park. It was very interesting in that there was many things going on. In one corner there was music and exercise, in another corner there were people playing a board game and then there was an area with water in which they inflate a ball a person gets in the ball and tries to stay up while on water (see photo). Darci is coming around a little each day, today we not only had a little smile but we also had a giggle!! However, that was short lived because this evening she had a temper tantrum that lasted over 1 hour. Thank goodness for Diane, I gave Darci to her and took an ice cream break! When I got back she was still crying but at least not a temper tantrum crying. We played with bubbles and that seemed to be the trick!!! She was very quiet and ended up over by one of the beds, Diane and I were talking and all of a sudden I hear a thump, she had fallen because she fell asleep standing up (no wonder why she was so quiet!!). I am really enjoying reading all the kind responses, it makes me feel closer to home!!!

Hi Jackie,
I just got a chance to read your blog. She is adorable. I am glad you are holding up well. I know it must be stressful, but she sounds adorable and stubborn, uh I mean strong willed. You will be back before you know it and she will be clinging to you. I cannot wait to meet her!! -
Hey Jackie why don’t you and Diane bring back one of these balls and see if we can take it for a spin on Radner lake! HA HA!

Tully yelled for me to come to the computer. He said “have you seen the new pictures yet of jackie and Darci today?” He had already pulled your site up. He is really enjoying the daily update, and so am I. Temper tantrums I remember them well. Bubbles and Ice cream can go along way to helping. What is the food experience like there and has Diane gone thru all her peanut butter crackers Yet?

I love that ice cream is your “drug of choice.” I’ll be sure to have a few gallons on hand when you visit! The new pictures are so cute and, from the sounds of it, you have a little one with a very strong will. 20 years of PICU training will come in very handy in the months to come.
It’s also so great that you have a connection now in Franklin…….Darci has a new best friend in the making!! Love, Aunty -
Maddie and Trevor want to know if that’s you in the bubble ball!!!! I’m thinking probably not. Every morning when we first wake up we check the blog so no pressure but keep it going. We love all the pics….soon there will be one of Darci smiling(:
Love Ya,

Every day in every way, (it is) getting better and better (from the movie “What About Bob”, I think). Kudos to Diane for being there for you! Love, Jeanne

I can’t get over how beautiful she is. If she can fall asleep standing up, she may have a future in medicine. I am thrilled about the giggle. Don’t worry, we will get you a lifetime supply of gelato when you get home!
Love to all of you!

Darci’s cousins hear the updates everyday, so thanks! As hard as the tears and tantrums must be, she sounds like a bright child since she is reacting. Also, as you mentioned, since she was in a foster home (not an orphanage), she must have made some real connections, also very good for her development! So glad to see that you are celebrating the small changes (smile and giggle), before you know, this transition time will have passed! We love you!

Dear Jackie:
She is so beautiful and I am so happy for you and Darci. She has a lot of spunk and people with spunk are never boring. I wish you both the very best and can’t wait to see you both in July.
Darci is very lucky to have a mother like you- I know it will be a fun and loving house, and a new puppy also.
When you are all settled down, you can look back and laugh at all of the tantrums and such.
Again, the Hansens’ all wish you well. Love, Kay -
I love the pictures! When you look at them you can see that she is becoming more engaged. It sounds like she has started the “terrible twos”. This too will pass. Cannot wait to see you three!

Lorrie says Hello. We are all enjoying reading the daily updates. We all think it is wonderful about the couple from Franklin. It will give you both some support when you all get back. Jan wonders if they are her son’s friends/co workers that were adopting also. Hope you are sleeping well. Diane must be a wonderfully beautiful friend to take on a tantrum crying infant for her mother to get a break. With friends like that, life is so much more enjoyable. Tell we all think she is great.

Too funny! I busted up when I read about her falling asleep standing up. LOL! She is a stubborn one. Reminds me of some of the goofy stuff my Noah does, just goofy. Take the peace when you can get it and take a break when someone offers. That’s what they tell all new mothers. It doesn’t change if your a new mother of an infant or toddler. You did the right thing; ice cream soothes the soul. Taking a few deep breaths and sitting in a hot bubble bath with the door closed helps too. 🙂
