Last night, Darci received her first bath-she was not a big fan of the bath!! She is really good at going to sleep, she actually likes her crib more than anything-I think that she sees it as a safe place for her. Today we ventured out to a plaza area. We took our lives in our hands!!! They have torn up all the sidewalks and unlike at home there are no alternative routes so you walk on the uneven dirt and rocks. If that is not hard enough with a buggy you have to try and not get hit by the mopeds or motorized bikes that ride on the torn up side walks. I have been the only one brave enough or maybe stupid enough to do it but it is the only time that Darci is not upset, she loves riding in the buggy!! It is also a humbling experience to be a minority in a country and not be able to speak the language. Me and Darci get many stares but the Chinese people are very nice and I was even asked today by a Chinese man if she was my daughter. I thought that maybe he was going to tell me off but he was just curious, it was the first time that I have been asked about my daughter that I could officially call her my daughter (she officially became my daughter yesterday). Darci’s mood today is not unlike yesterday, mostly crying!! However, there are few tears! She is a strong willed little girl who wants her way. Unfortunately, she has a mom that does not really know what her way is yet. I do feel lucky even though there have been many tears because she is right where she should be for her age. She walks, likes to feed herself, and babbles. I can not say that about some of the other children. Most of them have attached to one or both of their parents (at this point Darci does not really want much to do with me-occasionally she will even turn her head away when I look at her). However, some of them that are older than Darci will not even stand on their own, do not feed themselves, nor do they babble. I have had several parents comment on how normal Darci is. These other children were raised in an orphanage, while Darci was raised in a foster home-I think this has made a world of difference. I do see some rays of hope, today she actually put her head on my shoulder for just a second, until she realized what she had done. We also saw a little split second smile. I have to be grateful for the small steps when they occur,as at this point they do not happen often. I have attached some pictures. The group picture is of some of us at a Pagoda in Nanchang, the rest are of Darci.

Jackie,
I am so excited for you and for Darci! I know that you are working hard and I imagine that you are tired, too. From your note it sounds as if Darci is sleeping fairly well, so maybe you are getting some rest. I hope you were able to be grateful and amused when Darci put her head on your shoulder….. Know that you are both in my prayers! –Linda -
Jackie…She is very cute. A little attitude and strong will…will serve her very well as she grows…your job will be to teach her to balance that with love and tenderness. The hugs will definitely come in time…for the first 9 months or so there were no hugs or kisses from Cole and now he showers me with them. You will see. Now his favorite thing to say is I love you 100million…becuz he knows that is a lot. We cannot wait to see you and the little one. Love from all the Petersons. See you soon.

OH Honey,
It will get better…until she is a teenager and then you will be doing all of the crying (or so they tell me). She looks like a handful and is gonna be so much fun. Give her time, let her come to you in her own way (more practice for those teenage years). She is strong, determined and courageous. What seem like small steps to you now are really pretty big when you look from the outside. Hang in there, it must be hard for you to be away from home without your loving friends, English tea, VIPER, and cozy home. It will all be here for you both in just a short while. Take and send more photos. Remember, when the times get tough, the tough go shopping!
Congratulations!

You are going to be her comfort when you get back to the states. Right now everyone else looks like her foster mom, her, and speaks her language, but when you get to this side of the Pond she will be out of her element and need you. No one else to go to. You’ll feel that head on your shoulder a lot more. Maybe even a hug. Hang in there girl. Be tough like a soaking wet kitten hanging from a branch; dig your claws in! She loves you, she just doesnt know it yet.

Wow! You have made real progress in such a short time! That is one very determined ( and very normal ) look that she is giving you sitting up in the crib. And what an amazing thing to be able to introduce her as your daughter.
Keep doing what you are doing-I cannot wait to meet her!

I agree with Lynn – hang in there! It’s not much different from “natural bonding”. I clearly remember having the thought that my crying, barely consolable 3 wk old Maybeth didn’t love me and furthermore was NEVER going to love me. And boy was I wrong! Time is on your side – you have the rest of your lives together and Darci is going through a really rough time. New caregivers, new surroundings, unable to communicate her distress except by crying…I imagine I would feel like crying under the circumstances. But this will all settle out with time for adjustment, and be a memory documented in a blog. Love, Jeanne
P.S. She is even cuter than her pre-adoption pictures!

Ya’ll hang in there! And, hey, if she doesn’t like a bath, what in the world is she going to think of a swimming pool? We’ll just have to find out! Looking forward to meeting her when you all get home. I imagine home sounds pretty good to you right now.
Congratulations, by the way…it’s a girl!! And she is yours.

PS….I always had to remind myself, when my 3 boys were much smaller…..you outwiigh them by far and can hang tough when you need to! Can’t say that one anymore, but it worked for years!!!
