McDonald’s or as they say in Chinese McDonald’s

Well today was a free day and it rained all day. This area of China is having horrible flooding, many people out of their homes and some lives lost. Luckily where we are it only rained, no flooding. I had heard that some people’s children (not in my group) took over 18 hours to get to Nanchang to be united with their new parents because roads were washed out. It also looks like the rain is to continue in this region and as we fly out tomorrow for Guangzhou (which is further south) I hope that we will not have any issues!! With the rain today I was not really looking forward to the day as Darci REALLY likes to be outside, that is where she is the happiest. So the English person in me came out and I and Diane packed up Darci and headed out to an indoor mall. You could just tell the looks on the local peoples’ faces “crazy Americans”!! We ate at a McDonald’s, which is not any different then the ones back home. But it struck me as funny that we were eating at a McDonald’s in China and jamming to Ricky Martin. Darci loved Ricky Martin, she danced, smiled and even had a good laugh!! She was very funny and cute!!! She refused to take a nap so the afternoon was a little rough at times. However, she has hated getting a bath but this afternoon we started playing with the water in the bath tub and eventually she ended up in the tub and had a great time; she did not even know she was getting a bath!! On a more serious note the other single mom (the mom is originally from India and is rather nervous)in my group took her daughter to the clinic today because she was congested. They told her that her daughter had a heart murmur. She came up to my room shortly after the visit, and was very upset, as I would be also. We all have a MD visit on Saturday and I am going to go with her to support her (she has no medical background) and answer any questions she might have as I am sure she will have more questions after the visit. How scary to be in a foreign country, not speak the language and have a sick child. The little girl is not blue, even when she cries-so that is good!! However, she is very quiet and a little pale. Hopefully, it will be nothing. Tomorrow we leave for Guangzhou fairly late, so I do not think I will be able to blog until Saturday

Love that smile! I’m sure they will continue to grow in number! How could any child NOT be happy when their mom takes them to Mickey Ds?!

Congrats on the successful water play/”bath”-things are looking up for the rest of the summer!

Praying for a smooth flight to Guangzhou (enjoy the shopping! are you going to be at the White Swan? I have FOND memories of the breakfast buffet there!). Also praying for your friend and her daughter-hopefully a murmur r/t illness?

So happy to hear that Darci is sharing more of her smiles. Ricky Martin – huh? Who’d have thought….?

Hope all goes well for the murmuring child. Odds are if it’s just now noticed for the first time, it’s an innocent murmur accentuated by her intercurrent illness/congestion (I’m assuming she’s at least Darci’s age). From the consultations I’ve done for a local pediatrician facilitating Chinese adoptions, I’ve been impressed by how well they take care of kids with significant congenital heart disease. All the cases I’ve looked at that were diagnosed early (first month of life or so), so I bet it’s all going to be ok.

Good luck with the flight – another chance to get to know Darci better (and maybe get some ideas on how to prepare for the long flight home. I’m thinking an alcoholic beverage for you would be appropriate! Maybe even two.)

Well, I laughed right along with Darci in that picture of her having a giggle. She’s obviously warming up to you. Very, very cute!!! How upsetting for that other new mom to find out her little one has a heart murmur. At least you can give her a little moral support and the benefit of your expertise when she speaks with the doctor.

I bet you never thought that you would go to China and become a fan of Ricky Martin :-). Maybe Darci could teach us some dance moves. It is good to see her million dollar smile! She is adorable. What a blessing for the other mother to have you along to go with her. It amazing how friendships and bonds are made. I am so glad that you are doing these posts and I will have to be honest, I am going to miss tomorrow’s update. Until then, best wishes!

It must feel wonderful to see those rarely shared smiles and laughter from Darci! She might be stingy with them now, but there will be many, many more of those to come as the two of you become a tight mother and daughter unit. A family.
